untitled, Corpus Christy Monastery series, 1997

I remember when I took this photograph. I saw Sister Mary of Jesus walking in it before she did so. I asked her if one could walk through it and she said yes. She walked ahead and I stayed behind in order to capture what I had seen in my spirit.

Corpus Christy Monastery was one of my first documentaries. It began in 1997 to 1998. It set me on the path that I am now on and for that I will always be grateful.
The sisters live on a 5.50 acres of land on a monastery that is over 100 years old located in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx. Being in the cloistered environment truly takes you away from the awareness of what is outside it's walls.
It's quiet corridors spoke to me as I walked in through them. The air and the smell was unique to itself. It was there where I learned to close my eyes and feel the environment in order to photograph, not what I saw but what I was feeling.
